University Students to Get Aakash Tablet for Free

The only affordable tablet in Indian market, The Aakash tablet, will soon be available for free to every Indian student. According to the Union Minister for HRD, Communications & IT, Government of India, Kapil Sibal, said at an event – ISA Vision Summit 2012. Kapil Sibal further added that on the basis of the feedback received from Aakash 1, they would be launching Aakash 2, which is a faster and more efficient version of the earlier version.

The current cost of Aakash is Rs. 2,276, however, Sibal stated that the cost will go down to Rs 1,500 once the total number of orders increase to one million. Sibal clarified that half the cost of the tablet would be subsidized by the Government of India (GOI) and the remaining Rs 750 would be funded by educational institutions.

“Today, electronics is the largest and fastest growing manufacturing industry in the world. Current global hardware production is around USD 1.75 trillion and by 2020 it is going to grow up to USD 2.4 trillion. On the domestic front, electronic driven industry has emerged as the contributor to national economy. “We are planning to distribute Aakash tablets to students free of cost to deliver e-learning experience to one and all”

Meanwhile, the government of Andhra Pradesh has reportedly sent a proposal to Sibal for buying 10,000 such tablets. It was decided by the Andhra Pradesh government that those tablets would be provided to the state universities, engineering and polytechnic colleges.

According to the news reports, The University of Mumbai has already booked for 25,000 tablets for their students.  The requests have come from its 80 above colleges and departments.
