The new console on the block is all set to astonish the gaming world very soon. With the huge success of PlayStation 3, which was released on November 11th 2006, Sony is on the verge to stun gamers around the world with its new and much anticipated product, PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 3 has revolutionised the gaming experience and a lot of people are waiting for PlayStation 4 and what it offers as technology has seen an immense growth since the launch of PS3. It’s confirmed that PlayStation 4 (PS4) is under development and is on its way. Sony’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Masaru Kato said diplomatically-
For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product, I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.
PlayStation 4 Features and Specifications
The Central Processing Unit of PlayStation 3 enhanced cell based processor with one PPE (Power Processing Element) at 3.2 GHz, which is dual thread, that is capable of processing two streams of instructions at a time, and eight SPEs (Synergistic Processing Elements) at 3.2GHz of which one is disabled for yield purposes and one is reserved for security purposes such as encryption and decryption of the hard drive in real time. The cell in the PS3 has an overall performance of 204 GFLOPs (Giga Floating Points per Second).
Sources have cited that PlayStation 4 will be bundled with 16 SPEs at the clock speed of 3.8 GHz. The cell in PS4 will be of 32 nanometer node. This will make it have an overall performance of whooping 500 GFLOPs.
Coming to the Graphics Processing Unit part, PS4 will team-up with NVidia by utilizing the NVidia GeForce GTX 700 (due to be released soon in the market). A 512 bit bus will be used, so that it can communicate with the cell exceptionally fast and a core clock speed in excess of 1GHz.
If all these are utilised properly, they could do 1080p at 120 FPS with high resolution textures and high AA and AF. PlayStation 4 will include “body movement-based control like Kinect” and it is going to continue with stereoscopic 3D. The latest on-going rumour report says that PS4 will use HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) instead of Blu-ray disc.
Nowadays, latest games take huge amount storage spaces. Games that use higher definition textures and graphics would take even more storage space like what we’re currently seeing on modern PCs. I expect PS4 with at least minimum of 1TB hard drive memory.
PS4 is going to feature the cloud storage for saving games and related data if the local storage is full. Looks like Sony will be following the footsteps of Microsoft’s latest upgraded Xbox 360.
PlayStation 4 will go green! That’s right. It is said to be made of eco-friendly materials. According to Yanko Design, the body of the console is composed by Joseph Dumary where 60% of recycle materials are used. It is also considered as energy efficient console because it will use zero watts in stand-by mode and it will deliver ECO Restart function that saves games, turns off the console, and can resume exactly where the user left off without a need for a full reboot. The console connects wirelessly to any DPConnect TV and detects the appropriate resolution and audio output.
PlayStation 4 Release Date
Many people are expecting that PlayStation 4 is set to be launched by the end of 2012. Speculating news reveal that PlayStation 4 will be announced at E3 this year. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sony reps denied rumors that the company was planning to reveal the PlayStation 4 during the upcoming E3 trade show.
In fact, the company is still planning to stick by its vision of the PlayStation 3 — which was released in 2006 — as a product with a 10-year life cycle. Bethesda’s Todd Howard, Game Director for the forthcoming blockbuster Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, claims that gamers should not expect follow-ups to the PS3 and Xbox 360 until 2014, at the very earliest.

It is too early to quote a price for the next PlayStation. So far, there is no confirmation about the details which is said above. We may have to assume that PlayStation 4 will cost the same as PS3 as for now.
