Microsoft to Launch New Social Networking Site “Socl” to Compete with Facebook and Google Plus

Now that Google has already challenged Facebook by creating a new social network if its own – Google Plus, Microsoft too has entered into the war of the social networks and is planning to release a new social networking site called “Socl”.

Back in July, Microsoft accidently revealed the site “Socl” which published a splash message introducing people to the network. However, the page was immediately taken down, and was replaced it with a message acknowledging the project.

Going to the site socl.com display nothing, however, a cached page from Google shows the following:

Microsoft's Socl- Splash Message

Thanks for stopping by.

Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web.

We didn’t mean to, honest.

Technology site, The Verge got a glimpse of an early look at the site, which is still currently in beta. Socl is said to function very similar to Facebook, but in terms of design and user interface, it looks like Google Plus and Twitter.

With Socl, users can post status updates, share photos, “like” your friends updates or comments, and share photos and videos. You can also search updates, which also include search results from Bing into your feed, which you and your friends can then interact with.

Socl - Microsoft's Social Network

It is unclear about when the new social networking site would be launched; however, rumors suggest that Microsoft may launch it publicly with an invite-based system.

Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and now Socl?

Now, the question is not about whether Microsoft’s Socl will be able to compete with already existing social networks or not, but it is whether do we really need another social networking site? Well, I don’t think so. With Facebook already existing from the past several years, and having put the once-upon-a-time-popular Orkut to drains, I’m sure Socl will not be able to reach to the extent of tightly competing with Facebook unless it has something unique which the other social networks don’t have.

Well, what do you think? Will Socl be successful enough? And do we really need an another social networking site?
