The Asus Zenbook – Features, Specifications and Pricing

World’s leading laptop manufacturer ASUS launched its new ultrabook – Zenbook, which was announced on October, 2011. The machine is available with ULV Intel Core i5 and i7 CPUs, 4 gigs of RAM and a SATA III SSD drive. It comes in two versions- the 11 inch UX21 and 13 inch UX31. Both the models weigh less than 1.2 kilograms which makes this an ideal for those who consider carrying it everywhere they go.

This beauty is on par with its rival, The Mac Book Air which also carries the same features in terms of looks. The Mac Book Air is also a brand new product of Apple. The keyboard and touchpad of the Asus Zenbook are metallic laced. The USP of this laptop is the performance and speed which is absolutely stunning and it’s the leading ultrabook in the market beating the Mac Book Air.

Asus Zenbook Features, Specifications

The Asus Zenbook uses a precision-crafted design measuring only 3mm at the front and 9mm at the rear. When the laptop is shut and held vertically, it looks like an elongated tear drop, featuring the razor thin edges.  The machine that not only looks stunning, but has enough of the latest technology packed inside that it can boot up from standby in just two seconds. Add to that a great battery and some impressive speakers and you’ve got a seriously desirable piece of kit.

 Asus Zenbook - Features

The Asus Zenbook is furnished with Intel’s latest processors Core i5 and Core i7 with the clock speed of 1.6GHz to 18GHz. It doesn’t use the traditional hard drives; instead, it opted for Solid State Drives (SSD) with a capacity of 256 GB (13 inch), whereas the 11 inch is configured with 128 GB SSD. The battery life of these two models is sublime. They can last for 7 hours of continual use. The screen of the ASUS Zenbook uses LED-back-lighting technology and is covered with a Super-TFT coating, which not only produces incredibly bright and vibrant images, but also is great on battery life. The 11-inch and 13-inch versions have resolutions of 1366 by 768 pixels and 1600 by 900 pixels respectively.

Asus Zenbook

One of the most beneficial features is that the Zenbook will automatically save files before the machine shuts down when you have less than 5-percent battery power left. The Trackpad- measuring 4.1 x 2.75 inches in the UX31’s is almost as large as the Mac Book Air’s (4.1 x 3 inches) and includes integrated buttons. Navigating the desktop was fairly smooth, but it takes more swipes to get from one side of the screen to the other.

The Zenbook has a nice selection of ports for an ultra-ultraportable. It offers two USB ports–one of them USB 3.0–as well as a mini-VGA port, a Micro HDMI port, and a headphone jack. You’ll also find an SD Card reader, which is a big plus on such a sliver of a machine.

Drawbacks of the Asus Zenbook

There are few hindrances with this machine. Firstly, the keyboard isn’t back-lit which makes you harder to type the keys in the dark region. Most of the latest laptops coming to the market have this feature and The Zenbook falls back here to impress.

The main issue with this notebook is the trackpad. The glass-covered pad itself is very wide and feels smooth under a finger, but hardware doesn’t seem to be the issue, software does. When gestures like tapping, clicking and dragging are done, it’s not smooth; the cursor or the pointer would fidget and end up selecting or open random files.

The Zenbook has no discrete graphics card, and therefore relies on Intel’s integrated graphics (as most ultraportables do). Graphics performance is slightly below average for the category. Testing latest PC games in Zenbook, it has managed a frame rate of 31.4 frames per second (at low quality settings and 800-by-600-pixel resolution). That frame rate is below average for the past few ultra-portables which are tested, but not too far below. Still, it means that the Zenbook won’t satisfy gamers.

Zenbook vs. Mac Book Air

The Asus Zenbook is a major competitor to the MacBook Air, and apparently called as a “MacBook Killer”. The Asus Zenbook’s performance and speed way to better that the MacBook Air. In terms of design, the Zenbook is truly stunning and is by far the best-looking Ultrabook in the market, leaving behind the MacBook Air. However, the Zenbook is slightly thicker in size, but despite that the Zenbook still wins against MacBook Air in terms of design.

Asus Zenbook vs Apple MacBook Air

The Asus Zenbook carries another advantage over Mac Book Air, which is the screen resolution. It has a 1600 x 900 screen resolution (UX31), which is going to allow you to do more work in less space due to the high pixel density. The price of the Asus Zenbook is lesser than the Mac Book Air, which again could be a major advantage.

Verdict and Pricing Details of the Asus Zenbook

Though this laptop has a flaky and crummy trackpad, the ASUS team are working to improvise the fixes. This machine has got a lot of beef inside it and it’s a sheer piece of awesomeness. If you can deal with the shallow keyboard and have faith that Asus will find its way with the trackpad, we have a feeling you’ll be very happy with this machine. It’s true, we still need to take a closer look at what Lenovo and Toshiba have to offer, but for now this is indeed the ultrabook to beat.

And finally, MacBook has a competitor. A big kudos to ASUS and their team for coming up with this remarkable machine.

Pricing of the Asus Zenbook

The Asus Zenbook UX21 is priced at $999 (Rs.48, 000) while the higher version, UX31 is priced at $1349 (Rs.65, 000), which is quite affordable.
